How To Sharpen Golf Grooves The Right Way

Sharpening the grooves of your golf club takes things from the old to the new and better.

Sharp grooves increase the performance of your clubface, resulting in better, more accurate shots. Buying new wedges every year is expensive and very tiring, and so you can sharpen your grooves to save a lot of money in the long run.

Here we look at some of the best ways to sharpen golf grooves:

1. Use a groove sharpener.

You probably have a wide variety of tools to sharpen your grooves at home.

It's quite easy and effortless to sharpen your grooves using a groove sharpener. However, you need to ensure that you are not too aggressive while sharpening as this can damage your clubface.

A 6-head golf groove cutter is ideal here. For more on how to use the tool to sharpen your grooves, see the instructions below or this video:

How to use a groove sharpener
  1. Clean your clubface thoroughly before you start sharpening your grooves using the groove sharpener. You must get rid of all dirt, stones and other matter.
  2. Hold the club and draw the sharpener across the wedge. Make sure to do this very slowly without adding any unnecessary pressure.
  3. You can start adding slight pressure after the first 4 strokes.
  4. You can use a lubricant to make your strokes more effortless.
  5. Continue making strokes for 10 minutes.
  6. Repeat this process every 10-15 rounds to ensure that your grooves stay sharp.

2. Get help from a professional.

You can get a professional to sharpen your grooves, although it may cost you more than doing it yourself.

On the other hand, getting a professional to sharpen your wedges can be a good idea particularly if you have no idea what you're doing. It will ensure that you don't need to buy new clubs and that the job is done correctly.

There is a chance of the grooves getting damaged if the sharpening is done incorrectly. Hence, getting a professional to do the job for you is a viable option, but it's up to you whether you want to go this route.

Club Maintenance

How To Sharpen Golf Grooves

Good maintenance of your golf clubs ensures that the grooves stay sharp for a long time.

It is always good to remove dirt using a dry towel or a plastic tee after each round. You can also use soapy water and a brush which has plastic bristles to clean the clubface and grooves and later wipe it with a dry towel.

Sharp grooves are important for producing spin and a solid ball flight. This is why it's important to maintain not only your grooves and clubface through sharpening and cleaning, but also your grip.

Integrate regular cleaning and maintenance into your schedule, and you'll maximize the life of your clubs.
